What inspired me to help
people and businesses grow.
I've always had a desire to know two things; business and what makes people tick. And perhaps that started with me wanting to understand how the world works at large. As soon as I hit adulthood it was an insatiable curiosity that lead me on a great journey of self-discovery and gained business acumen.
I wanted real world experience. So at age 17 I became the proud owner of a small garden nursery in East Brisbane, Queensland.. In hindsight, what was I thinking! I knew nothing about plants, nor how to run a business... nonetheless there I was, a business owner on a crash course to learn business and horticulture!
After eight years in the nursery game, which became a family business, I exited to play a bigger game entering the corporate arena. I joined one of world’s fastest growing international trade exchanges, Bartercard. It was at it's peak of success at the time I joined. And I was fortunate to be learning and being mentored by some of the greatest entrepreneurial minds at that time.
I learned what it takes to be success, to be a part of a dynamic, highly driven, fast moving company. Both from the functions within a large corporation; to the operations, success and challenges of their clients, SME’s (Small to Medium Enterprises).
I spent ten years with the company, working under the banner of their head office, the highest performing brokerage Australia wide (one of approx. 400 brokerages). I thrived in this environment and was fast-tracked through the company ranks until I was sought out to venture abroad and set up operations in Canada (with a large existing trade exchange to rebrand and align). For 2 years I played a key role in growth and acquisitions, managing, training and driving company goals in a senior management role.
In my ten year tenor my achievements were noted and I was awarded Trade Co-ordinator of the Year, both in Australia and Canada. I broke company records, and as a result set new benchmarks company wide. I managed large teams of Brokers, Managers, Sales teams, and administrators. I became the spokesperson for events, the trouble shooter for brokerages, and the sought-out expert in my field. In this time I worked directly with over 2,000 (SME’s) businesses as a consultant and business advisor.
Bartercard was a huge advocate of continually learning and development, and I know this was key in my success. There is no question this was a highly challenging, highly rewarding, totally enriching time in my life, and the greatest business schooling one could ever ask for!
What next?
Alongside my business growth I was equally as committed to my personal growth, and to learn what makes people tick. I studied many modalities including Psychotherapy, Coaching, Training, Emotional Intelligence and Counselling. I took a deep dive into the world of personal and professional development, totally inspired by how we can fulfil our untapped potential. The burning question always - What is the formula for success?!
It became more and more apparent, and not just from a theory, but from a practical application, and that is – business and human dynamics go hand-in-hand. We cannot truly succeed without fully embracing both paths of our development.
And so it began… in 2008 I started my own consultancy business that was driven by a deep desire to raise awareness that the two aspects of business and human behaviour are essential to formulate success.
Alongside my own consultancy business I was also engaged as a contract trainer working on behalf of other training organisations. In this time there were so many cases of people that were in the wrong training. Sent to do skills training, where it was their mindset and attitude that required focus. Nothing breeds success like a 'can do' attitude. And yet for many that is not innate.
Success is hugely generated from the inside out. I continually witnessed people who needed to learn how to thrive and be a leader of themselves, to take ownership of their 'business within a business', to know how to get out of their own way to then generate the success. Not learn another process or gain more tools to enhance their skill.
The training was ‘cookie cutter’ and not a one size fits all. And the big one, it was just too focused on skill. And whilst skill is important, there are two elements that are even more important; Will (mindset and attitude), and Fit (alignment to vision, blue and culture). To be successful there needs to be a balance - Skill, Will, Fit (see The Alignment Formula below).
So I gathered up what I knew was missing in the learning and development world, drew on all of my gained knowledge and wisdom, and created my own content and suite of programs to ensure that the training was impacting from the inside out.
